Come and Sing! Handel’s Messiah

The old cliché of aspiring singers getting practice in the shower is something of a truism, partly, no doubt, because of its privacy. Just as important in the amateur’s choice of this venue, though, is the resonant acoustic of the space. If this all sounds somewhat familiar to you, then cast aside the hairbrush and step out of the shower – here’s your chance to join the professionals and sing in that most acoustically revered of all spaces, a cathedral.

Not just plain old singing, either – on this Come And Sing! day you’ll get the chance to participate in a full day’s vocal coaching and choral training, before performing Handel’s masterpiece, Messiah, alongside soloists from the Bradford Festival Choral Society in Bradford Cathedral.

Whether experienced or not, Messiah is a delight to sing as part of a massed group – the composer’s innate grasp of melody makes the tunes easy to sing, whilst the strong harmony parts are based upon the most natural of intervals, making even contrapuntal harmony lines easy to follow by instinct.

The day of singing is open to all, regardless of age or ability. If the thought of singing sans hairbrush is all a bit much for you, though, don’t despair – you can always just go along to the performance in the evening. Who knows – you may be inspired to get practising in time for next year!
